In 1984, twin sisters Helen and Ellen, inspired by a story about a soup line in Knoxville, felt a call to serve their community by feeding food along with healthy doses of love and kindness. Dream and calling became reality when The Love Kitchen opened its doors in 1986 and served its first 22 guests. Today, still powered by the spirit of the sisters, and love and kindness of volunteers, The Love Kitchen serves over 3,000 meals each week to both homebound recipients and in-house guests.
Volunteer Opportunities
Monday: 10:00am – 6:00pm
* Scheduled volunteers only – not open to public
• Food preparation and cooking for outbound meals
• Container count and organization for outbound meals
• Sorting and storage of incoming food donations
• Washing dishes and general kitchen cleanup
Tuesday: 10:00am – 4:00pm
* Scheduled volunteers only – not open to public
• Food preparation and cooking for outbound meals
• Portion and package meals for outbound delivery
• Sorting and storage of incoming food donations
• Washing dishes and general kitchen cleanup
Wednesday: 10:00am – 4:00pm: Lunch Served at 1:30 PM
* Doors open to public at 1:30 PM for lunch service
• Portion and package meals for outbound delivery
• Sorting and storage of incoming food donations
• Sort and bag dry and canned goods, as well as fresh food, for on-site food pantry
• Food preparation and cooking for in-house lunch
• Setup and serve in-house lunch at 1:30pm
• Washing dishes and general kitchen cleanup
Thursday: 10:00am – 5:00pm: Lunch Served at 1:30 PM
* Doors open to public at 1:30 PM for lunch service
• Stack meals for delivery into 7-meal towers
• Box and stage for pickup by delivery volunteers
• Sorting and storage of incoming donations
• Food preparation and cooking for in-house lunch
• Setup and serve in-house lunch at 1:30pm
• Washing dishes and general kitchen cleanup
Thursday: 11:30am – 5:00pm: Meal Deliveries to Elderly, Disabled, and Homebound
• Drivers deliver according to their personal schedules
• Pick up for meal deliveries begins at 11:30am ends at 5:00pm
